BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE) — A bill introduced in the Massachusetts state legislature aims to create a commission to study education funding in the state.
The bill would establish a commission to study possible changes to the current formula used to distribute funds to schools.
Local school districts
said that they’re finding the current Chapter 70 system isn’t keeping up with demand, with many districts getting the same amount of money each year despite inflation.
In Dighton-Rehoboth, cuts were proposed for 33 staff members in the last two years amid a funding crunch, according to Bill Runey, the superintendent of schools.
“We’re at the point where we don’t have the ability to stretch the rubber band anymore,” Runey said. “It’s not in service to our students and it’s not good practice for our staff members.”
Runey added that there are no cuts proposed in the current budget year, but he also said other districts are stuck in the same situation that he was last year, and that a long-term fix is needed.
The bill is being sponsored by State Sen. Jason Lewis. It’s currently being studied by the Massachusetts Legislature’s Joint Committee on Education.
