State senator to file bill that would create St. George school system

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — State Sen. Rick Edmonds will unveil his plans to file a bill that would establish an independent school system for the newly incorporated City of St. George on Thursday afternoon.
A news release states the proposed legislation will include a funding measure
that would be introduced as a constitutional amendment. Leaders have said an independent school system is a top priority for St. George leaders and residents.
Edmonds, R-Baton Rouge, is set to discuss the bill at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 20 at St. George City Hall, located inside the St. George Fire Headquarters at 14100 Airline Highway. St. George Interim Mayor Dustin Yates, State Rep. Emily Chenevert and St. George Councilwoman Patty Cook will join Edmonds.
This year's regular legislative session is scheduled to convene on Monday, April 14.
