AUSTIN (KXAN) --- Unfinished homes in south Austin, that had broken windows and tattered roofs, are now torn down. The homes were covered in graffiti, with tall weeds growing in the driveway. The city of Austin’s Development Services Department told KXAN as of March 12, all the residential stru ctures on the property were demolished. (Photo: KXAN) PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Unfinished homes vandalized and abandoned in south Austin According to the subdivision’s website, the Southstone subdivision on West Dittmar Road in south Austin was under construction. However, neighbors in the area said construction abruptly stopped awhile ago, and people started vandalizing the homes. "You just understand what happens with vacant properties," said neighbor, Brendan Turrell. "It's always going to lead to broken windows, some interesting art." The situation prompted the city of Austin’s Development Services Department to get involved. The department received a total of 16 complaints about the subdivision. Complaints ranged from: Illegal dumping Trash Tall weeds and grass Pests Unsafe structures At the time, the department told KXAN it regularly visited the property, conducted clean-ups and placed surveillance cameras to monitor illegal dumping. However, now that the structures are torn down and the property has been mowed, the department said the code violations will be closed.
