A suspect was killed and three Pueblo officers were injured Tuesday in a shootout near the Colorado State Fairgrounds, police said. Pueblo police officers and sheriff’s deputies responded at about 7:12 p.m. Tuesday to reports that another officer had been shot near Mesa Avenue and Cedar Street on the south side of the city, according to a news release from the department. The intersection is north of Bessemer Park and about 2 miles east of the Colorado State Fairgrounds. When Pueblo officers and deputies arrived on scene, “additional shots were fired” between the suspect and law enforcement, according to the release. Police said the suspect, who has not been publicly identified, fled the area on foot and continued shooting at officers and deputies. Multiple officers returned fire and shot the suspect, according to the news release. It’s not clear how many officers were involved or which Pueblo department they were from. Officers provided emergency medical attention, but the suspect died at the scene of the shooting. The Pueblo County Coroner’s Office will identify the suspect at a later date.
