Where to find free tax preparation help in San Diego County

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Tax season has once again returned and most taxpayers have about a month left to file for the income they earned in 2024.
While the process may be straightforward for some, others may need a little help to complete their filings — and there are plenty of resources fol
ks here in San Diego can take advantage of to make sure their tax return gets in on time.
For those who do not want to pay for tax preparation consultants, there are a couple ways to receive assistance for free.
Average tax refunds are up in 2025 so far, total early returns down
The IRS offers several online self-service tools that can help people work through filing their returns independently. These resources cover everything from IRS' Direct File program, how to check refund status, and how to correct a return.
People who want in-person help can visit one of the IRS' Taxpayer Assistance Centers, which can help with account inquires, basic individual tax law assistance, understanding different tax forms and more.
There are two Taxpayer Assistance Centers in San Diego County: one in downtown (880 Front St., Suite 1247) and one in San Marcos (1 Civic Center Dr.). Hours and appointment scheduling information for each of these locations can be found on the IRS' website.
Beyond these options, certain taxpayers may be eligible to obtain additional tax prep assistance through two free programs offered by the IRS, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance specifically allows local accountants to give free tax preparation help to low- to moderate-income taxpayers, while Tax Counseling for the Elderly gives this assistance to those ages 60 and older.
In San Diego, there are more than two dozen organizations participating in these programs, including Dreams for Change, San Diego State University and International Rescue Committee. To find the closest location, taxpayers can use the IRS' free tax help search tool.
Taxpayers who make less than $67,000 a year in San Diego County can also call 2-1-1 to schedule an appointment for free tax assistance.
Tax season: How to file a tax extension
The deadline for people to file with the Internal Revenue Service is April 15, also known as Tax Day, to avoid any penalties. Those who need an extension can submit a request to the IRS before the deadline to get a little more time.
Before setting out to file, people should make sure all needed documents have been gathered, including a W-2 or 1099 form, bank statements, pay stubs or unemployment records, and any documents to take advantage of existing tax credits.
