(KRON) -- An East Palo Alto mother who brought her 18-month-old son to the emergency room with severe head and neck injuries was found guilty Tuesday of child abuse, the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office announced.
Tamika Dawson brought her little boy to the Stanford Emergency Room on J
an. 5, 2019. The now-39-year-old mother claimed that her child was injured after falling off of a bed, the DA’s office said.

Doctors found the toddler had a large subdural hemorrhage, bleeding and swelling on the back of his neck and cervical spine, and a laceration to his liver. He also had “extensive retinal hemorrhages in both eyes,” prosecutors said.
The critical injuries required emergency surgery, according to the DA’s office, and resulted in “significant” long-term neurological damage.
In court, medical experts testified that the boy’s injuries were the result of abusive head trauma and blunt abdominal trauma, refuting the mother’s claims. The jury believed the experts, and after four days of deliberations, they found Dawson guilty of felony child abuse. The jury also found true the allegation of infliction of great bodily injury on a child under five.
Dawson faces up to 12 years in state prison. Sentencing is scheduled for April 16. ...read more read less
