LOWEST JOBLESS RATE: The Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach metropolitan statistical area had the lowest unemployment rat
e in Florida for a metro area in January at 3% while Florida’s unemployment rate had a slight uptick to 3.5%, data the state Department of Commerce released Monday showed. Miami-Dade County alone had 2.4% unemployment in January for the fifth consecutive month. The state’s jobless rate was up from 3.4% in December. The national unemployment rate in February was 4.1%, up from 4% in January. Florida will release a February rate next week.
ULTRA TRANSIT: Miami-Dade Transit is extending both Metrorail and Metromover service hours for those who attend the Ultra Music Festival in downtown Miami’s Bayfront Park from March 28-30. Both will start service at 5 a.m. and run through 2 a.m. the following morning on Friday, March 28, and Saturday, March 29. On Sunday, March 30, service will end at midnight. One hitch: the Park West Metromover Station that would normally serve passengers at the music festival is closed for up to six months for renovations. The country also warned that five Metrobus routes through the area will be detoured from 9.m. Thursday, March 27, until 6 a.m. Monday, March 31, because of the festival activities. The county said too that buses that serve the Omni area, Miami Beach, downtown and adjacent areas may be delayed during the festival period.
BUS MILESTONE: Noting with approval last week that “it’s the first time we’re seeing that we’re planning for the opening of the South Dade Corridor,” now scheduled for July 21, Miami-Dade Commissioner Eileen Higgins joined three other members of the Appropriations Committee to unanimously hail major changes in the Better Bus Network that kick in on that date. Commission approval is required for major bus schedule changes. Under the shifts, the last of the county’s Metrolink temporary service routes will cease functioning and will be replaced temporarily by contract bus service with larger vehicles until the county has enough buses and drivers to handle the routes itself.
COURTHOUSE NAMED: Miami-Dade commissioners voted unanimously this week to name the new county courthouse that has not yet opened for the late Osvaldo N. Soto. The name is to be the Osvaldo M. Soto Miami-Dade Justice Center. He was a president of the Cuban American Bar Association and also a president of the Spanish American League Against Discrimination.
