INDIANAPOLIS — Two people were injured in a shooting on the near southeast side of Indianapolis Tuesday night.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to A&A Market — which is located in the 2400 block of South State Avenue — around 7:39 p.m. o
n a report of a fight. Before they arrived at the scene, officers received multiple reports that indicated numerous juveniles were involved in the fight.
While police were on their way to the area, witnesses called dispatchers and claimed shots had been fired nearby. When officers arrived at the scene, they did not initially locate any shooting victims.
Upon further investigation, however, law enforcement located an adult male with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds just down the street from the scene of the fight. The man was transported from the scene to IU Methodist Hospital in stable condition.
IMPD later learned a second person was injured in the same shooting. Police reported that the second victim — an adult male — transported himself from the scene to a local hospital.
Law enforcement has confirmed that the second victim is also in stable condition.
Detectives believe the shooting the two men were injured in stemmed from the fight that originally broke out near A&A Market. Officers indicated guns were likely drawn at some point during the fight and shots were fired.
Police currently have one home in the area surrounded. Witnesses told IMPD almost all the parties who were not shot ran into the home after the fight.
IMPD is in the process of obtaining necessary warrants to search the home. Police believe they will be allowed to enter the home and continue their investigation later this evening after search warrants are granted.
"I understand people are going to have differences, and they're going to have arguments and verbal arguments, but when it resorts to physical confrontation, and in this case it resorted to gun violence, that's never a way to go," IMPD Night Watch Captain Don Weilhammer said after the shooting. "What people need to realize is when you resort to serious bodily injury, it could've been death. It affects more than just that person you injured. It affects entire families and neighborhoods."
Police do not believe the shooting poses an ongoing threat to the neighborhood. IMPD is encouraging those with information on the fight or subsequent shooting to contact Detective Hashley at (317) 327-3475.
