Editor's note: Any information regarding Kenneth Gordon's involvement in the Westlake shooting or crash is from the Chatham County District Attorney's Office. A Chatham County Police Department spokesperson said that Gordon is not a suspect or person of interest.
CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) - Di
strict Attorney Shalena Cook Jones identified Kenneth Jeffery Gordon as a suspect in the Westlake Apartment shooting on Tuesday morning.
Jones said Gordon was out on bond when the shooting happened. Later Tuesday afternoon, Gordon was involved in a serious vehicle accident and ran from Savannah Police, according to Jones.
"In our community, there is nothing bigger and more grave than senseless gun violence that ends in death... We've had shootings in this community with defendants who have actually been out on bond or have relevant criminal history for similar offenses," Jones said. "We are doing everything we can right now and round tabling with other leaders to find a way to end gun violence."
News 3 reached out to the Chatham County Police Department (CCPD) to confirm this identification. A spokesperson replied, "CCPD has not publicly named any suspects in this morning’s shooting at Westlake."
Original Story:
At approximately 12:45 Tuesday morning, CCPD officers responded to Westlake Apartments for multiple reports of shots fired and calls reporting a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers learned that multiple structures and vehicles had been hit by gunfire. The structures included buildings in Westlake Apartments and the nearby Ocho Rios Apartments.
One victim was transported from the scene by EMS with non-life-threatening injuries. A very short time later, victims with gunshot wounds began arriving at local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The victims are three men and two women.
Detectives do not believe this was a random event, and believe the parties involved were known to each other.
Chatham County leaders are calling for an end to gun violence. The shooting happened in Commissioner Tanya Milton's district. She shared her frustration with News 3.
“I just think it's a sad day that we are discussing shootings in our community almost on a daily basis," Milton said. "I don't know what else can be done. They give them the right to carry a gun, but not to kill people, not to shoot people... I don't know how you get people off the street.”
Aaron "Adot" Whitley says this incident highlights a much larger issue of absent gun ownership and management.
“I'm speaking as a gun owner, a licensed concealed permit carrying gun owner, saying that we do need to have more responsible gun ownership laws," Whitley said. "We have to look at the other factors that surround those who are involved in these types of incidences. Oftentimes, it's access to affordable housing, livable wages, and education."
Chatham County’s Criminal Investigations Division detectives interviewed witnesses, collected evidence, and executed search warrants. The Chatham County Police Department is investigating this case with the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
