Darian DeVries hired to be next head coach of Indiana men's basketball team
Mar 18, 2025
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Indiana men's basketball team has hired a new head coach.
On Tuesday evening, Indiana University Athletics confirmed Darian DeVries had been tapped to coach the Hoosiers starting next season. Before he was hired by Indiana, DeVries coached at West Virginia and Drake.
DeVries posted a combined record of 169-68 during his tenures with the Bulldogs and Mountaineers. His teams went 89-43 in conference games.
Drake won one regular season title and two Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championships while DeVries was there from 2019-24. DeVries spent just one season (2024-25) at West Virginia before moving on to Indiana.
"This is unquestionably one of the top jobs in America," DeVries wrote in a prepared statement. "As someone who grew up in the Midwest loving the game of basketball, I've always admired the IU basketball program for its championship-level success, tradition, and fan support.
"There's a passion to succeed at the very highest levels both within the Big Ten and in the NCAA Tournament, and that's a desire that as a coach I share. On top of that, the alignment is there on a department and university level to make that happen. I'm excited for this opportunity and am ready to work relentlessly to assemble a staff and a roster that competes for championships."
In his lone season with the Mountaineers, DeVries' team posted 19-13 overall and 10-10 conference records. A preseason poll projected West Virginia to finish 13th in the Big 12 in 2024-25.
In 2023-24, the Mountaineers went 9-23. Less than 3% of West Virginia's 2023-24 roster returned to play for DeVries in 2024-25.
Despite their past struggles, the Mountaineers nearly qualified for the NCAA Tournament in DeVries' first season. West Virginia finished the season with three wins against teams ranked inside the AP top 10 and entrenched itself on the NCAA Tournament bubble.
Ultimately, the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee put other bubble teams like Texas, Xavier and North Carolina in the field instead of the Mountaineers.
Before he ever arrived in Morgantown to coach West Virginia, DeVries had been known to quickly change programs' fortunes.
Drake went 17-17 overall and 10-8 in conference play in 2017-18. When DeVries took control of the team the following season, the Bulldogs posted 24-10 overall and 12-6 conference records.
Drake made one NCAA Tournament in the 47 years that preceded DeVries' tenure there. The Bulldogs also had just five 20-win seasons in their 112-year history before DeVries arrived.
Drake appeared in the NCAA Tournament three times under DeVries' guidance (2021, 2023 and 2024).
"We went into this coaching search with some very specific things we were looking for in our next head coach, and Darian emerged as someone who, on paper, met and often exceeded our criteria," Indiana Athletic Director Scott Dolson said via press release. "Once we had a chance to talk to him, we knew we had the right person. Darian has a plan for building a championship culture that can compete at the highest level on a year-in, year-out basis.
"He has extensive D-1 coaching experience that includes 15 trips to the NCAA Tournament as a head coach or as an assistant. This past season at West Virginia, he inherited a last-place Big 12 team with no significant contributors returning, and managed to more than double its win total despite a pair of significant season-ending injuries. Finally, he is passionate about the opportunity to lead our program. We are excited to welcome Darian and the entire DeVries family to our Hoosier family."
DeVries success at Drake helped him earn Missouri Valley Coach of the Year honors two times. His players also earned numerous accolades at Drake.
In 2019, Nick McGlynn was named MVC Defensive Player of the Year. Four of the players DeVries coached earned All-MVC honors.
Two of DeVries' Mountaineers earned All-Big 12 honors in 2024-25. Jovan Small was an All-Big 12 first-teamer, and Sencire Harris made the All-Big 12 Defensive Team.
"As President of IU, it is my expectation that our university strives for greatness in everything we do from academics to athletics," IU President Pamela Whitten said via release. "Darian has demonstrated that he embraces that elite standard. In fact, he has a well-established track record of elevating programs to new levels of success. This is a great day for IU men's basketball and Indiana University."
At Indiana, DeVries will take over for Mike Woodson, who had been coaching the Hoosiers since the 2021-22 season. While Woodson was at the helm, Indiana went 82-53 overall and 41-39 in Big Ten Conference play.
Indiana won 20 games in each of Woodson's first two seasons. The Hoosiers went to the NCAA Tournament in both years.
Indiana failed to win 20 games over the last two seasons. The Hoosiers have not made the NCAA Tournament since 2022-23.
In February, Indiana announced that Woodson would relinquish his head coaching duties at the end of the 2024-25 season.
Like DeVries' West Virginia team, Indiana was considered an NCAA Tournament bubble team at the end of the year. IU missed the tournament after losing its first game of the Big Ten Tournament to Oregon at Gainbridge Fieldhouse last week.
Both West Virginia and Indiana declined invitations to other postseason tournaments like the NIT, setting the stage for DeVries to take over for Indiana.
DeVries' arrival could signal the beginning of a new era of recruiting for Indiana. The three-person recruiting class DeVries' brought to West Virginia ahead of the 2024-25 season was ranked 23rd nationally by 247Sports. The class also featured two players ranked in the top 75.
The two players who earned All-Big 12 honors under DeVries at West Virginia — Harris and Small — transferred in from Oklahoma and Illinois.
With DeVries now at the helm, Indiana may have an opportunity to land at least one high-profile transfer player — Tucker DeVries. Tucker DeVries, a two-time MVC Player of the Year and MVC Freshman of the Year, is Darian DeVries' son.
Tucker DeVries transferred to West Virginia from Drake when his father was named head coach of the Mountaineers.
Tucker DeVries had season-ending surgery on an upper-body injury in February. A report from ESPN indicates Tucker DeVries applied for a medical redshirt after suffering the injury.
If the NCAA approves Tucker DeVries' medical redshirt, he will be eligible to play one more season. Tucker DeVries averaged 14.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game last season at West Virginia.
Darian DeVries and his family are from Iowa, and some believed he was in the mix to be the next head coach of the University of Iowa men's basketball team because the Hawkeyes fired coach Fran McCaffery last week. Before he was named IU's next coach, a report surfaced Tuesday afternoon that indicated Darian DeVries was no longer in consideration for Iowa's head coaching job.
Indiana had eight seniors on its roster in 2024-25. With Darian DeVries taking over for Woodson, it's unclear how many members of the Hoosiers' current team will return for the 2025-26 season. It also unknown how many members of Woodson's coaching staff, if any, will be back at IU next year.
Indiana will hold an introductory press conference for Darian DeVries on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. ...read more read less
