Just a few months after the state shutdown in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a family in Austin opened up Discount Paradise M&M, LLC in the former Habitat for Humanity ReStore location.
Nearly four years later, a new owner has taken over the small business, which carries a variety of p
roducts at discounted prices.
Mayte Bedolla Lopez, speaking through the translation of Mariana Mendoza, said the store will have much the same look as it’s had in the past including clothes, shoes, toys and more.
“A little bit of everything,” Lopez said.
A single mother, Lopez said this is her first time taking a step like this and that it’s equal parts nerve-inducing and exciting.
At the same time Lopez saw it as an opportunity to impart an experience on her children.
“She took it as an opportunity to bring her kids up front so they can move forward in life,” Mendoza translated. “She saw this opportunity and she needed to take it.”
The store is going to have plenty of opportunities for people to stop by as it is open seven days a week: 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. Mondays, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
While the location sells products on many different fronts, Lopez said that they are also accepting donations, which people can drop off during store hours. Anything but furniture, which the space can’t support due to space.
Despite opening again under Lopez’s leadership just this past weekend, she already has plans she wants to explore for the future including discount cards in a punch format. After the 10th punch, customers would get $10 off their purchase.
She also intends on offering a discount on a revolving section of the store.
“Every Wednesday will be something new,” she said.
Lopez said she feels that all of these things will help bring awareness to Discount Paradise and that the whole enterprise can further add to Austin.
“It’s really exciting,” she said.
