Yankees’ Clarke Schmidt to throw live BP with 2025 debut now up in the air

TAMPA — Clarke Schmidt is scheduled to throw live batting practice on Thursday. This much the Yankees know.
But asked if Schmidt is still on track to make his regular season debut on April 3 against the Diamondbacks, Aaron Boone said, “I don’t know.”
“It just depends on do we want to keep
building him up for another start or two,” the manager said. “That’ll be the question we have to answer because obviously he’s not going to be up to a pitch level.”
Schmidt, who experienced shoulder fatigue following his spring debut on March 11, felt fine on Tuesday after throwing a 24-pitch bullpen on Monday. He was originally supposed to start Sunday’s spring game against the Pirates. He was then bumped to starting Monday’s game against the Blue Jays before being downgraded to the bullpen session.
“I wouldn’t be throwing if there was a concern of something major,” Schmidt said after his bullpen, per the YES Network’s Jack Curry. Schmidt noted that he and the Yankees were being cautious.
Schmidt has only made one start this spring, as a cranky back delayed his schedule earlier in camp.
Whether or not Schmidt starts the season on the injured list could directly impact fellow righties Will Warren and Carlos Carrasco.
If Schmidt begins the year on the shelf, the Yankees have room for both camp standouts. If Schmidt starts the year rostered, the rotation would only have room for one.
Warren, coming off a rocky debut season, can be optioned to the minors, while Carrasco can opt out of his minor league deal this Saturday. That gives the 15-year vet, set to start on Wednesday, a logistical advantage over Warren, as the Yankees can’t afford to lose any more rotation depth with Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, JT Brubaker and Chase Hampton all injured.
Goldschmidt’s Back
Paul Goldschmidt (sore back) received treatment on Tuesday after exiting Monday’s game early. The first baseman said he has “zero” concern about missing Opening Day, and Boone hoped to have the vet back in the lineup on Thursday or Friday.
Eyes on Peraza
Oswald Peraza, a third base and bench option, is okay after exiting Tuesday’s game against the Red Sox early. Boone said the infielder has had an appointment with an eye doctor on the books for a while, hence the early departure. ...read more read less
