It is shaping up to be an active day of weather across the state. Precipitation chances, strong winds, and critical fire danger all continues through the afternoon.
A strong spring storm is making its way across New Mexico this afternoon. The storm is bring rain and snow chances to wester, centr
al, and northern New Mexico. As well as very strong wind gusts across the state. Additionally, this storm system is cooling off temperatures. This active weather will be continuing throughout the day today and into tomorrow. The storm will move out on Wednesday making way for a high pressure to move in later this week. Bringing calmer and warmer weather over the weekend.
In the meantime, wind gusts this afternoon could reach upwards of 75 mph. The strongest gust are forecasted for eastern New Mexico. Across parts of northwestern New Mexico gusts are only forecasted to reach 55 mph. The National Weather Service has issued several Wind Advisories and High Wind Warning for most of the state. These alerts will be in place until 8 p.m. Tuesday March 18th.
As the storm is bringing isolated rain and snow showers to northern and western New Mexico, humidity levels are dropping across eastern and southeastern New Mexico. In southeast New Mexico relative humidity levels could be as low as 5%. Strong winds and low humidity creates a risk for fire. Eastern and southern New Mexico is under a critical fire danger. Far southeastern New Mexico is under an extreme fire danger. Additionally, Red Flag warning have been issued for much of the state. These warnings will be in place until 8 p.m. Tuesday March 18th.
Finally, the strong winds are picking up blowing dust across much of the state. Albuquerque lost sight of the Sandia Mountains this afternoon due to the dust. Blowing Dust Storm Warning are continuing to be issued for parts of southern and southeastern New Mexico.
