NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Target is officially expanding its operations to New Kent County -- right along Interstate 64 -- with plans to begin the construction of a massive warehouse by the end of March.
According to an announcement from the county in the morning on Tuesday, March 18, the majo
r retailer will bring its 1.4 million-square-foot distribution facility to exit 211 along I-64. The new location will be located at Forge Logistics in the southwest quadrant of the New Kent City Center site.
“New Kent County staff, the Economic Development Authority and the Board of Supervisors have worked tirelessly over the past several years to draw major players, such as Target Corporation, to our community," said New Kent County Board of Supervisors Chair, Thomas W. Evelyn. "The return on investment is starting to show for our efforts as this Fortune 500 Company makes New Kent its newest location for a fifth distribution center in the Commonwealth.”
The property, which was purchased in February, will be located next to AutoZone, Inc. at the New Kent City Center site, the announcement reads. Two years ago, AutoZone invested $185.2 million to establish a new warehouse and distribution center in New Kent, creating 352 new jobs.
“We are excited to welcome Target to New Kent County,” said New Kent County Administrator Rodney A. Hathaway. “This substantial investment and the creation of hundreds of high-quality jobs is a tremendous economic boost for our community and region. New Kent has made a commitment to infrastructure, education, and workforce development, and we are confident that Target will benefit from these efforts. We look forward to strengthening our relationship and maintaining a business environment that will foster the continued growth and success of this company.” ...read more read less
