BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) -- A district judge dissolved an order to stop the execution of Louisiana death row inmate Jessie Hoffman. Hoffman's execution is set for the evening of Tuesday, March 18. A temporary restraining order to keep the state from executing Hoffman expired at 9:30 a. m. this morning. Attorney General Liz Murrill said in a March 17 statement that she expected the plan for execution to go forward despite Hoffman's attorneys filing pleadings. His attorneys filed an emergency petition with the U.S. Supreme Court Sunday, March 16 asking justices to halt the execution. Hoffman was sentenced to death for the 1996 kidnapping and murder of Molly Elliott in New Orleans. Louisiana has not carried out an execution in 15 years but announced in February that it would resume executions using nitrogen gas after the legislature approved the method in 2024.
