Director Paul Harris needs Trenton city council interrogation about Stacy Park project
Mar 18, 2025
A thorough investigation on the Stacy Park debacle by Elise Young, a reporter for The Jersey Vindicator, grilled Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora.
When pressed, Gusciora referred detailed questions to Recreation Director Paul Harris. Young reported Harris did not respond to emails and phone calls for com
ment.
Welcome to the Trenton world, Ms. Young, a place where city officials hide from persons who seek honesty and transparency. They have mastered the duck and dodge, holding out until journalists give up the ghost and pursue the next boondoggle or corrupt act. Harris, who requested questions sent by email, never responded here. His image, including the jungle safari hat worn during early visits to the Stacy Park project, seems destined for missing persons posters inquiring — Have you seen Paul Harris?
Residents have a right to know how this Stacy Park project developed. How did contractor Julio land this job? What’s the name of his company? Did City Council approve this project that destroyed trees and a natural habitat near the banks of the Delaware River? When the NJ Department of Environmental Protection notified Trenton officials about violations that occurred at Stacy Park, Gusciora and Harris had a responsibility to inform city residents.
Interestingly, Gusciora who previously answered all questions about all subjects with expertise exhibited by contestants on Jeopardy, kicked Harris to the curb and under a bus. Double Jeopardy.
While Gusciora and Harris committed this latest malfeasance, they should not shoulder all blame alone. Many of the problems and malfunctions of city government connect to an ineffective city council. City council government morphed from aggressive to passive. Even now, blame about almost every issue flows toward a past city council, as if Mayor Gusciora or East Ward Councilman Joe Harrison had no part in the dysfunction.
Our current city council lacks power, influence, voice, direction, and individuality. A group elected to keep city officials honest, say next to nothing about thievery, dishonesty, and deception.
Trenton needs this city council to ask Mr. Harris all questions regarding the Stacy Park project. Enough time has passed for him to have found answers to pertinent inquiries.
Step up to the podium, Mr. Harris. Batter up.
