CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Police in Chicopee are warning residents against crypto-currency schemes.

The police department posted a warning on Monday about a new Bitcoin scheme where people have called stating there there was a prob
lem with their Facebook account and was asked for a payment in Bitcoin to fix the problem.
Bitcoin and cryptocurrency are commonly used in schemes as they are one of the hardest to trace and one of the most anonymous which makes it very hard for someone to get their money back.
Hours after that warning was posted, an officer went to hang up a notice on a Bitcoin ATM in the city. An officer was able to stop an elderly man from depositing money to pay a schemer. The man thought he was posting bail for a family member and was about to deposit $4,000.
Chicopee police are reminding people that legitimate businesses and public offices will almost never ask for Bitcoin as payment.
You should always confirm with your family before sending any money.
