MEBANE, N.C. (WGHP) -- Mebane Mayor Ed Hooks said 6,000 units will soon break ground in one of the fastest-growing cities in the Piedmont Triad.
With several businesses, including Buc-ee's on the way, Hooks said city leaders are doing everything they can to make sure all these people have a place
to live.
Clay Street Tavern owner Wendy Day has seen the growth with her own eyes.
The city council approved a proposal for a new development called the North Mebane Village. Once it's finished, there will be 192 townhomes and 36 single-family homes.
That is just the beginning.
"Mill Creek. We just approved 675 lots at the subdivision for Mill Creek. Pretty much doubling the size of the golf community," Hooks said.
With all the growth, other essential needs for newcomers and current residents must be met as well.
Hooks says the money to build two new fire stations will be included in the city's next budget.
"We have grown so wide, that response time needs to be taken care of in both the east side of Mebane of Buckhorn Road and the west side of Mebane off of Trollingwood Road where Buc-ee's is coming," Hooks said.
Hooks says they'll more than likely have to raise taxes.
"We don't know how much," Hooks said.
It's a tax increase that Day says is inevitable in a city that keeps getting bigger.
"At least it's going towards a good thing for fire stations and an increase in first responders," Day said.
Hooks said the expansion to the wastewater treatment plant is expected to be done in early 2027.
Hooks also said they'll have a public budget meeting on Thursday.
The city leaders will vote on the finalized version on July 1. ...read more read less
