BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A historic moment unfolded at Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge as the facility marked a major milestone—welcoming its 400,000th baby. The hospital, known for its dedication to women’s health and childbirth, celebrated the special delivery over the weekend.
Applause filled the halls as hospital staff and leadership acknowledged the significance of the moment. CEO Rene Ragas expressed his excitement about the milestone.
“I’m delighted to announce that our 400,000th baby was delivered early Saturday morning,” said Ragas.
For the parents of baby Blair, the moment was a complete surprise.
“On behalf of me and my wife, we are incredibly grateful for all of our awesome nurses and Dr. Boudreaux for doing an awesome job delivering our baby girl,” said Blair’s father.
Woman’s Hospital first opened its doors in 1968, and it wasn’t long before the first baby was born within its walls. Marguerite Scardina, the first baby delivered at the hospital, recalled the day with fondness.
“They literally opened the doors for her at 6:45 in the morning. They unlocked them, and they said everybody was a little nervous—I was the first patient coming in, and I was born at eleven,” said Scardina.
Fifty-six years later, Woman’s Hospital remains a leader in maternity care, continuing its mission of providing exceptional support for mothers and their newborns.
“They make you feel like you’re not just a number—that you’re special,” Scardina added.
With thousands of babies delivered at Woman’s Hospital each year, hospital leaders say this milestone is just the beginning of many more celebrations to come.
