MT. PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) - Last Thursday's Radcliffe Street house fire that killed two, impacted a neighborhood and one CofC Cougar.
College of Charleston pitcher Peyton Nelson has lived on Radcliffe Street since last Summer. Busy with baseball and class, Nelson didn't see neighbor Troy Smith, S
r. often but spoke to him every chance he could.
Peyton wasn't home when last week's townhouse fire broke out in his complex but was called at 7 a.m. to come back and he knew something wasn't good.
Nelson told News 2 Sports on Monday afternoon he is grieving with Smith after this tragedy.
"I can't imagine what he's going through. Losing two family members as well. He's lived in the house since he was 11 years old. I can't imagine what he's going through," Peyton Nelson said.
Over the weekend, Peyton and his roommates started a GoFundMe to help in Mr. Troy's recovery efforts.
As of six p.m. Monday night, they had raised 85 % of their goal.
"Our house wasn't as affected as his, we talked about it and that was the best thing to do," said Nelson. "Guy lost everything so we decided if we can help him it would mean more to us than anything." ...read more read less
