GARDEN PLAIN, Kan. (KSNW) -- The City of Garden Plain is the recipient of a Moderate Income Housing grant.
The $300,000 grant from the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation will help fund the construction of five duplexes in Garden Plain. They will be built in the Renner Multi-Family Housing Devel
opment at Harry and Main in Garden Plain.
“I was born and raised in Garden Plain; many of my extended family members still live and work in the community," says Cary Renner, owner and developer, who expresses his gratitude for the award in a news release from Garden Plain. "I chose to invest in the project knowing that affordable housing is an ongoing need in the community. Garden Plain will always be home.”
The development will have 10 new housing units: Two two-bedroom single-story duplexes and three three-bedroom two-story duplexes. They will have a Craftsman Bungalow design.

In exchange for the grant, five of the 10 units will be reserved for five years for individuals or families that meet the moderate income criteria under Housing and Urban Development regulations. The other remaining units will be rented for market value.
A survey conducted in 2023 by Garden Plain showed a need for single—and multi-family, rental and owner-occupied housing, as well as senior housing.
“Another great win for our community,” Mayor Kevin Hammond said. "From that study, the City developed a housing strategic plan. We’ve been working that plan and it’s paying off. We have seen new single-family homes built in Bentwood and Trail Ridge Additions, and some infill development around town. We look forward to the construction of these homes and welcoming new residents to our community.”
The city says the development will also help address drainage issues at the intersection that have affected surrounding homes. The project is expected to have a total cost of $3.05 million.
Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2025 or early 2026. ...read more read less
