Rural firefighters, aerial crew stop wildfire near Topeka
Mar 17, 2025
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Firefighters from multiple rural fire departments and an aerial crew from the Kansas Forest Service (KFS) worked through the afternoon to get a wildfire north of Topeka under control.
Shawnee County Emergency Management Director Dusty Nichols said the fire started just before 2:30
p.m. on Monday, March 17 in the 5800 block of Northwest 39th Street in Menoken Township. He said firefighters from Silver Lake, Soldier Township, Dover, Auburn and Hoyt fire departments responded to the call.
Silver Lake Fire Chief Joe Hawkins said it started as a grass fire but moved into a wooded area. Several cedar trees were burned but no structures were involved. The fire burned a total of about 10 acres with no injuries reported.

Hawkins said he requested aid from the KFS. The agency deployed a plane to drop water on the fire from above. The plane made four aerial drops while crews fought the fire on the ground.
Hawkins said they were able to get the fire under control after about two hours. Firefighters remained on the scene to cut down trees near the edge of the scene in an effort to prevent the fire from moving deeper in to the wooded area.
