WESTPORT, Mass. (WLNE) — The Westport Police Department said it arrested a New Bedford man after he was allegedly found in possession of a gun without a license to carry.
Nathan Santana was charged with possession of a large capacity firearm without a firearms identification card, unlicensed pos
session of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a large capacity feeding device, and receiving stolen property.
Around 4:16 a.m., police responded to an alarm activation at the Westport High and Middle Schools, and cleared the call.
While the officers were driving on Old County Road, they discovered a man, later identified as Santana, walking in the rain in a white tank top and sweatpants.
Westport police said Santana claimed he had been walking and jogging with a friend, but had taken a wrong turn. When asked about the friend, the suspect told officers the friend was at home, according to police.
During the interaction, police said they noticed the defendant allegedly had a small pink wristlet; which Santana said was his girlfriend’s wallet, as well as scratches on his arms and back, and blood on his clothes.
Westport police said they then found indications of a firearm at his waistline, and ordered Santana to put his hands on his head, which he abided by.
Police allegedly seized a loaded semi-automatic handgun and arrested Santana, who officers later discovered did not have a license to carry, according to Westport police.
During his booking, police were able to communicate with the owner of the wallet, who was unaware it was stolen.
Santana was arraigned at Fall River District Court.
