MS officials prioritize recovery after tornado damage

ELLIOT, Miss. -- Mississippi officials are working to help Grenada County recover from the tornado damages over the weekend.
The tornadoes damaged structures, downed powerlines, and uprooted trees.
“We're doing initial damage assessments. While we were waiting to do that. We also had, our R
ed Cross volunteers partner with the local community volunteers," said Gail Thompson, American Red Cross. "The church's, been fantastic and fabulous. The community has come together very well. And we have helped in partnered with the local community to address some feeding needs and some water."
Thompson said that they're making sure everyone has food and water, and they're working to see if there will be an open shelter so everyone who has been displaced would have a safe place to stay.

According to Grenada County emergency management, power should be restored to 99% of the affected area by 10 p.m. Tuesday.
“Right now, the city of Grenada has the Grenada Auditorium opened up for a shelter. Anyone that needs to go there can contact me or my office," said Chris Whitehurst, Grenada County EMA Director. "If people need disaster relief, we have people in the area that are, at Emmanuel Baptist Church right now. They can contact, John Hampton with Mississippi Baptist Disaster Relief, and they can help with debris removal.”
Three people were injured following Saturday’s storms.
“Well, I'd like to say, first off, to all the residents in the city of Grenada. Thank you all for coming to the aid of our community down in Elliot," said Mayor Charles Lathan, City of Grenada. "We say we're the city that smells, but we're the city that cares. Because when in these types of disasters and such, I just love it when our community comes together and support our neighbors."
