INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indy man is facing a felony count of attempted robbery and other charges after police say he jumped through the drive-thru window and stole cash at a Taco Bell on the city's south side.
According to court documents, police with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Poice Department wer
e called around 4:38 a.m. on Feb. 28 to 3901 Madison Avenue, the listed address for a Taco Bell in the area, in response to a robbery reportedly taking place.
As part of their investigation, officers took statements from three female employees. They told officers on the scene that they were in the process of closing the store down and had kept the drive-thru window open to air out the room since they were using cleaning supplies.
The employees said a man, who police later identified as Darrell Williams, had allegedly jumped through the open drive-thru window and entered the store. He then demanded money from the employees. During this encounter, Williams allegedly grabbed one of the employees by the arm and made her take him to the back room where he continued to demand money from the safe.
At this time, the other two employees said they ran out of the store and called the police from another business in the area. Williams reportedly let go of the employee when he realized the back room did not have a safe in it. The woman escaped and ran out of the store, court documents said.
The employees said Williams was wearing a gray sweatshirt, jeans, a black ski mask and white work gloves, according to court documents.
The employees reported seeing Williams flee the area in a red Chevy Malibu as he went southbound on Madison Avenue.
The employees returned to the Taco Bell and determined that cash was missing from the registers. Court documents did not confirm the exact amount that was missing.
IMPD said video surveillance appears to show Williams arrive in a red 2016 Chevy Malibu. Officers noted that the Malibu had a damaged driver's side mirror and a cracked windshield.
Williams can then be seen allegedly leaning into the open drive-thru window where he attempted to access the register. At this time, Williams reportedly became "hesitant" and returned to his vehicle.
He then exited the vehicle and tried to unlock the register a second time. Officers noted the suspect was not wearing a mask during the first two attempts to unlock the register. He returned to his car a third time and put the vehicle in reverse before returning to the drive-thru window and attempting to unlock the register again.
He returned to his car again and briefly drove away from the business before returning a few minutes later, court documents said. Williams then climbed into the open drive-thru window and allegedly grabbed the first employee he saw by the arm. He can then be seen leading her through the store to the back office area. The surveillance video shows the other two employees running away and exiting the store.
After letting the employee go, Williams can be seen allegedly using the key to open the registers and taking cash. He climbed out of the drive-thru window and drove away.
Detectives used a license plate reading traffic camera system as they worked to identify a suspect vehicle. Police soon located a red 2016 Chevy Malibu that matched the same vehicle shown in the surveillance footage.
The suspect vehicle information led investigators to the 1500 block of Woodson Drive. Officers proceeded to execute a search warrant at an apartment there. During the search warrant, police said Williams and two other individuals exited the apartment without incident.
Investigators identified Williams as the same individual in the surveillance footage who also matched the description provided by the store employees. Officers also found clothing the suspect was allegedly wearing on the night of the robbery, according to court documents.
While speaking with police, Williams allegedly admitted that he was the suspect in the video.
He went on to state that he visited the Taco Bell after consuming alcohol and was "intoxicated." He said he had stopped at the fast food restaurant to order food but made the decision to jump through the window when "the opportunity presented itself."
While searching the apartment, officers also seized two firearms. One other individual was arrested in connection to that.
Williams was arrested and brought to the Marion County Jail where he faces the following preliminary charges:
Attempted Robbery (Level 5 Felony)
Kidnapping (Level 6 Felony)
Theft (Class A Misdemeanor)
A Stay Away Order was also filed preventing Williams from visiting the Taco Bell on Madison Avenue as a condition for his pre-trial release in the case.
According to online court records, Williams is scheduled to appear in Marion Superior Court 20 for an initial hearing on March 18. ...read more read less
