Severe storms heavily damage Shelby County co-op
SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Cleanup efforts were underway Monday in Shelby County after storms swept across Indiana late Friday night and in the early morning hours Saturday.
The Shelby County Co-op had a new structure going up that high winds
destroyed Friday night, co-op manager Neil Smith said. “The storm went through and so I thought I better get over here. Before I could even do that, I was already getting calls about the barn and to come take a look at it. It’s pretty much a do-over at this point.”
The heavy winds caused the entire framing of the structure under construction to collapse, landing on tractors and a forklift stored inside. Smith said Monday, “We were going to start metal on it today and start getting it incased, if you will. Now, we’re just a few days short, I guess.”
“I’m fairly confident some of this we may have to have engineers come look at it. On the office part, it doesn’t look nearly as bad, but obviously we need someone with more knowledge to make sure it’s good before we move forward.”
Smith noted that while the damage to the co-op building was significant, he had not seen extensive damage to residential properties in the surrounding areas. “Mainly just trees and limbs and whatnot. I think in the southern part of the county, there as a grain lake and some barns with damage. As far as I know, no one was hurt.”
