CSPD launching program to alleviate impound capacity
Mar 17, 2025
(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The City of Colorado Springs is implementing a pilot program to help alleviate capacity issues at the Colorado Springs Police Department's (CSPD) impound lot.
The City said the pilot program is the result of amendments approved by the City Council in 2024 to Colorado Spring
s Municipal Ordinances regarding the removal and impound of vehicles. The amendments allow the City to contract with a towing company to tow and store certain cars that are not considered evidence and are not recovered stolen vehicles.
According to the City, cars not related to law enforcement investigations, such as traffic crashes where the driver or owner is transported by ambulance and not available to sign a towing contract or other cases where the car defaults to impound status but is not involved in any criminal activity, can be stored by the contracted towing company.
"The influx of the vehicles that aren't evidentiary tow vehicles, those come in and out of the impound lot on a daily, weekly, monthly basis and takes up a lot of our employees' time," said Commander Patrick David with CSPD. "If we don't have those vehicles, we'll be able to dispose more of those vehicles, keep our impound lot to a reasonable occupancy level."
Those who need to search for their car that has been impounded can continue to do so through CSPD's online search. The website includes information about storage location, hours, fees, the release process, auction dates, and FAQs. The City added that all information is entered by staff and may not be immediately available.
If your car is missing and does not show up as being impounded, contact the non-emergency number for CSPD: (719) 444-7000.

The City also said that all tow companies operating in Colorado are regulated by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC), and citizens can review these regulations at any time. The current CSPD impound contract tow company charges below Colorado PUC maximum allowable rates for towing fees. ...read more read less
