National Weather Service confirms a pair of rare EF4 tornadoes touched down in Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – As a storm system moved through Arkansas Friday night into Saturday morning, with it came a rare occurrence.
According to the National Weather Service, while surveying areas affected by the storm, they found damage consistent with an EF-4 tornado near Diaz in Jackson County.
Officials said that the tornado had estimated peak winds of 190 mph, 11 mph short of being classified as an EF-5.

On Sunday night, NWS officials also said they found damage consistent with an EF-4 tornado near Larkin with estimated peak winds of 170 mph.
Officials said that Friday night’s storm produced the first EF-4 tornadoes in Arkansas since 2021 which was the first since the 2014 Mayflower/Vilonia tornado.

KARK Chief Meteorologist Todd Yakoubian said that Arkansas has not had an EF-5 tornado since the late 1920s near this area in the town of Swifton.
This weekend NWS officials have also discovered an EF-3 tornado in Fifty-Six, an EF-2 in Fitzhugh and an EF-3 in Cave City. ...read more read less
