One step closer to peak bloom: Cherry blossoms reach stage 2 of 6

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Get excited- the District's iconic pink cherry blossoms are one step closer to peak bloom.
In a post on the X platform Sunday, the National Park Service announced that the blooms are now at the "Florets Visible" stage, meaning larger green florets are now visible on t
he cherry trees along the Tidal Basin.

This comes just five days after the NPS said the trees reached stage one, the "Green Buds" stage.

Cherry blossom bloom stages:
Stage 1: Green Buds
Stage 2: Florets Visible
Stage 3: Extension of Florets
Stage 4: Peduncle Elongation
Stage 5: Puffy White
Stage 6: Peak Bloom
In 2024, stage two started on March 5, with peak bloom just under two weeks later, on March 17.
NPS estimates that peak bloom will happen from March 28 to March 31 this year, when 70% of the Yoshino Cherry blossoms are open.
Peak bloom varies each year, depending on weather conditions. Extraordinary warm or cool temperatures have resulted in peak bloom as early as March 15 (1990) and as late as April 18 (1958), according to NPS. ...read more read less
