WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Kansas high school basketball teams wrapped up state championships on Saturday. You can find scores from around the state below and area highlights in the video player above.
Wichita Heights and Maize High squared off in the 6A boy's consolation game, and it was the final
time legendary Head Coach Joe Auer was on the sidelines for the Falcons. In the end, Maize High was able to capture the five-point win.
"Just play the game that they love with such joy and energy was a tremendous treat for me in my last game. So. And Chris is a good friend, so a lot of respect for Coach Grill and how he coaches their team, and it's just a beautiful thing to watch. Both teams compete like they did. And I'm just an honored guy who had a wonderful career and couldn't be more thankful. And that's my number one emotion right now," Joe Auer, the head coach of the Wichita Heights boys' basketball team, said.
Saturday in Hutchinson was electric as two teams were hardware back to their hometowns.
For the girls, Silver Lake took on Halstead. Silver Lake opened the second half with a 7-2 run for a double digit, but the Dragons thrived under the heat, took their first lead in the fourth quarter, and hung on for the 3 point win, 48-45. So after having their last chances taken away from cancellations in 2020, Halstead is heading home with the first state title in program history.
"They were making it hard, and we felt like we were settling on both ends. We'd done it the hard way all year. Don't be scared to work hard. That's how we've done it," Derek Schutte, the head coach for the Halstead girls' basketball team, said. "It's a blur right now, but man, I'm so proud of those girls, the way they played and battled all year and the end of this tournament. They did it together, and it's exciting.
Then, on the boys' side, it was Goodland versus Hesston. The Cowboys led by two at the half, but Hesston opened the third with an 8-point lead, and some big plays and fouls in the final minutes allowed the Swathers to take home the gold, 51-46.
It means a lot. I mean, we're a basketball town. We know how to do it when it comes to March. We've been really fortunate with really great players who love to put in the work and put in the effort, and show up every day, and give what it takes to be here. This isn't easy. It seems really normal around here, but this is really hard to do every single year," Garrett Roth, the head coach of the Hesston boys' basketball team, said.
