ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) -- U.S. Postal Workers gathered at the Allen County Courthouse Sunday to share the importance of letter carriers nationwide and give the community the chance t
o meet the face behind their mail.
Ken McNeill, Member of Local 116, the Summit City National Association of Letter Carriers said the point of Sunday's rally was not to be political.
"It's kind of like a community awareness, to make people realize that your neighbors are your postal worker family," McNeil said. "You gotta support your local post office."
"Every person in America gets mail delivered," McNeil said.
McNeil said postal workers are hosting a national protest at the courthouse dealing with the more political issues associated with USPS on Sunday, March 23 at 1 p.m.
"I invite anyone to come out and enjoy because it's good old-fashioned unionism," McNeil said. "Support your local postal person, it doesn't matter who they are."
The rally comes just days after Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced his plans to cut 10,000 workers and billions of dollars from the U.S. Postal Service budget. In a letter to Congress Thursday, the Postmaster General announced he plans to work with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to address the “big problems” at the $78 billion-a-year agency, which has struggled in recent years to stay afloat, according to an article from the Associated Press.
In Feb. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced he would be stepping down from the position after a nearly five-year tenure.
