Why do we need a grand vision of costly transportation, new hotels tearing down of our current transportation facilities City Hall parking structures and putting affordable housing on an existing parking lot? Also drastically changing the flow of Main Street? The construction alone would devastat
e Main Street businesses and further alienate locals from coming to Main Street. The city staffers have already spent a lot of time and money try to force fit a huge vision of the area and it seems we are going down a rabbit hole of information and plans. At the time of the 2002 Olympics, my family lived on Park Avenue. We volunteered to do the warming fires on Main Street and went to many events as well. It was a great time and was extremely well organized. Temporary buildings were put up, such as the Budweiser venue. Remember it’s the Salt Lake Olympics, and Park City has less venues than in the past, so let’s back off a bit on these visions and keep our historic town as best we can. Most of the infrastructure is already here and we can modify as we go forward. Let’s not get grandiose. My family and I have been here for 52 years. We all love Park City and have so many friends. I have served on the Historic Commission and both of us have served on the Historical Society Board. We want it to be a good place before and after the Olympics for our family and community. We want to preserve Park City and its historic traditions. One other thing, just an observation and comment about the Main Street Alliance and city staffers always complaining about loss of business. I come to Main Street to get my mail and go to restaurants and theater. I question a number of business models on Main Street. For example, the historic Claim Jumper Hotel has basically been vacant for 15 years with just a partial art gallery. The historic Rio Grand Train Station was vacant and shut down for many years. Now finally there’s a new restaurant. We will have to try it. I think the Main Street Business Alliance and the city staff could do more to encourage better business models.
