INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The National Weather Service (NWS) on Saturday confirmed multiple EF-2 tornadoes touched down in southern Indiana, while others were found in central and northern Indiana.
According to the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF-2 tornadoes have
wind speed estimates of 111-135 mph and can cause considerable damage to well-built structures.
The first tornado touched down five miles west of Somerville, Indiana, a town in Gibson County. According to NWS, there was EF-2 damage with estimated peak winds of 115 mph.
The second site of tornado damage was found down in Oakland City, Indiana, a city in Gibson County. According to NWS, there was EF-2 damage with estimated peak winds of 117 mph.
The third damage site touched down in Algiers, Indiana, a town in Pike County. According to NWS, there was EF-2 damage with estimated wind peaks of 120 mph.
NWS is investigating to determine if it was three separate tornadoes in each site or if it was one EF-2 tornado that traveled through all three.
In Daviess County, the NWS says an EF-1 tornado, estimated peak winds of 110 mph, traveled over 13 miles northeast past Dogwood Lake and towards Loogootee. Investigators were able to find two large grain bins that were completely destroyed, with their debris thrown at least a mile away. Wind from the tornado damaged Loogootee.
An EF-1 tornado was confirmed south of Brownstown. With peak winds reaching 105 mph, the tornado ripped the roof and collapsed the walls of a mobile home in Jackson County.
A separate EF-1 tornado, with peak winds around 110 mph, was confirmed to have touched down just west of Mecca. That tornado mostly traveled through rural woods, however some houses and garages were damaged from tree and pole debris.
Further north, the NWS in Chicago says that two tornadoes touched down in Lake County. An EF-1 hit Cedar Lake and an EF-0 was seen in Schererville and Merrillville, however no max wind data has been released.
