Mar 16, 2025
LATEST UPDATE: The Storm Prediction Center has issued a tornado watch until 2 p.m., highlighting an increasing severe threat for southeast Georgia, South Carolina, and south-central North Carolina.
A broken line of thunderstorms continues to push east this morning into an environment with st
rong wind shear and low instability. The highest severe potential will be along bowing segments and embedded areas of rotation, which could produce tornadoes.
The severe threat will increase this morning. Damaging wind gusts (60-70 mph) and embedded tornadoes will be the greatest threats. The tornado threat will be highest east of I-77, but isolated quick spin-ups will be possible across the region. Heavy rain will also be possible with 1-2″ falling within a short period of time.
Storm Timing by Region
Charlotte Metro Region & I-77 corridor: 6-9 A.M.
East of I-77: 9 A.M. – 12 P.M.
Severe Threats
Damaging Wind
Damaging straight line winds 50-70 mph, will be the main concern, with downed trees and power outages possible.
Tornadoes
Strong wind shear may support isolated embedded tornadoes within the main line of storms.
Flooding Risk
Heavy rain, with totals 1-2″, within a short period of time, could overwhelm drainge systems leading to localized flooding and hazardous travel.
Gusty northwest winds and ongoing showers will persist behind the front. If the front slows, or loses intensity there is potential for the severe threat to extend into the early afternoon for areas east of I-77. A wind advisory remains in effect until this afternoon into the early evening for the region.
