The lone contest that required overtime was the last – the boys 5A championship between No
. 1 Volcano Vista and No. 3 Sandia. The Hawks went on to win 60-53.
While the game had a thrilling finish, it did not exactly start off that way. It was tied 6-6 after the first quarter. The two teams combined to shoot 4-22.
The game started to pick up steam in the second quarter, and it remained close in score until the fourth. The Hawks built a nine point lead with 3:35 remaining.
Sandia, in need of some momentum, received two quick three-pointers from Zyaire Ndyabagye to close the gap. Thomas Adams then hit a game-tying three with one minute remaining.
In its ensuing possession, Volcano was content to run out the clock and try to get a shot off at the buzzer. Sandia freshman Isaiah Brown then stole the ball from Volcano's Kenyon Aguino and Brown had his own opportunity to win it as the buzzer. His shot missed and the game went into overtime tied at 51.
In the extra period, the Hawks outscored the Matadors 9-2.
Volcano's dynamic duo in the middle, Kenyon Aguino and David Lunn, had another stellar performance. Lunn finished with a game-high 19 points while Aguino had 18. Both finished with 7 rebounds.
Lunn and Aguino's presence caused problems for the Matadors. The Hawks won the rebounding battle 32-25 and scored 12 more points in the paint.
Sandia had a trio of players reach at least 14 points. Thomas Adams led the team with 17.
The win marks the fourth consecutive title for the Hawks. Volcano Vista is the fifth program in state history to accomplish that.
"It is rewarding, just because of the seniors that we have," said Volcano Vista head coach Greg Brown. They deserved to go out this way just because of the impact that they have had on our school and our program. I am very humbled to be a part of this and I'm thankful."
Three Volcano Vista seniors, Kenyon Aguino, Rian Gonzales and Hudson Brown, were along for the entire ride. During their time in a Hawks uniform, they won four state titles and only lost four games.
