NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) -- The City of Newport News had a Grow Your Own Food Container Garden Giveaway on Saturday at the Newport News Early Childhood Development Center. The event introduced people to the benefits of homegrown produce. It consisted of a mini-farmers market, a community resourc e fair and interactive workshops, which all aimed at fostering healthier lifestyles through fresh, affordable food options. Everyone got a free starter vegetable plant or seeds for vegetables. There were additional free giveaways and raffles with chances to win gardening items such as a mini greenhouse and plastic-raised bed gardens.
