Kansas City Current fans eyeing NWSL Championship cup at homeopener

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Current opened their season on Saturday at CPKC Stadium to thousands of excited fans.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how the crowd's going to be,” said Current fan Bob Plagens.
“To see the difference between last year and this year, hopefully, they
’re still as piped!”
Even on a cloudy and chilly day, the blue crew showed up in teal suits and red beards to support the Current.
“We love it,” said fan Chris Hawkins.
“It doesn't matter, rain or shine, tornadoes, doesn't matter. As long as a match is on, we’re on!”
Last year, due to limited parking spaces, many fans were forced to walk or take a shuttle to the stadium from parking lots in the River Market. This year, construction around CPKC has caused a little more frustration.

“It's not bad,” Plagens said about the walk.
“It's a little bit worse with all the construction, I mean, the thing that would help most is getting across those railroad tracks also.”
He pointed to the tracks south of the stadium, the road that crosses them was blocked by barricades.
“If you're walking, you've got to go down that bridge down the walkway, same with bikes, that’s the only bike route. So, everyone has to come one way, one place.”
Many fans chose to pay the price for a parking spot near the stadium. Others chose to catch a rideshare, and said the process was smooth despite gameday traffic.
No matter how fans got to the stadium, all of them were excited for a new season of Current soccer.
“We want that cup,” Hawkins said.
“We were close last year, didn’t quite make it, but you know, this is our year.”
He wasn’t the only one who thinks the Current have a solid team this year.
“I think I think we're going to be one of the teams to beat this year,” Plagens said.
“I’m looking forward to a lot more wins this year. I think we got a really stacked lineup.”
Both Plagens and Hawkins say the fans are what makes Current games so fun and create a tough environment for opponents.
“No one's going to want to come here,” said Plagens.
“We keep each other supported, we keep each other going even on cold day like this,” Hawkins added.
The Current defeated the Portland Thorns 3-1. Their next home game is on March 29 against the Utah Royals. ...read more read less
