ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The class 3A boys basketball championship featured a matchup of district rivals Robertson and St. Michael's. The Cardinals were the ones to leave the Pit with the blue trophy and a 58-46 victory.

After s
coring the first bucket of the game, St. Mike's did not score for the reminder of the third quarter. The Cardinals proceeded to go on a 14-0 that spanned seven minutes. Robertson led the rest of the way.
Cardinals senior guard Jesse James Gonzales led the game with 24 points. George Smith (13) and Brian Lucero (10) also reached double figures.
For Robertson, the season as a whole was filled with many highs and lows, both on and off the court. Among the adversity that the Cardinals faced includes a mid-season coaching change. The team rallied to finish the off season with 11 consecutive wins.
"This team is tight," said Gonzales. We're a close team. It goes beyond basketball with every single one of us. We knew what we could do and accomplish and that's what we did."
Prior to the 2021-2022 season, Robertson had never advanced to a state championship game. The Cardinals have now been in four consecutive. Seniors Jesse James Gonzales, Nathaniel Gonzales and Brian Lucero have been part of all four.
