KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City Current soccer is back on the riverfront today, March 15. In their 2025 home opener, the Current beat the Portland Thorns 3-1 behind goals from midfielders Temwa Chawinga and Michelle Cooper and striker Cristiane de Oliveira. The goals weren't the only action in t he match, though. One moment that stood out during the match was when a VAR (video assistant referee) review overturned a penalty granted to the Thorns. A VAR review looks over decisions made by the on-field referees, usually regarding goals, penalty kicks and red cards. The couple are part-owners of the Current. In addition to the Mahomes, stars from the popular TV show "Grey's Anatomy" were in attendance. One of the more irregular storylines from the game, however, came after the match ended. Current outside back Ellie Wheeler got engaged following the game, prompting a celebration from fans and Wheeler's teammates.
