Beware the Ides of March. The weekend is off to a calm and quiet start, but our weather pattern turns active into Sunday morning. A powerful cold front sweeps into the Carolinas from the west by daybreak, bringing scattered strong-to-severe storms across the WCCB Charlotte viewing area. Damaging
gusty winds will be the main focus Sunday morning, but rotating thunderstorms – known as supercells – may produce a few tornadoes across the Tar Heel and Palmetto states. The worst weather should clear out by noon across the Metro, but a few models are picking up on new storms firing up east of Charlotte in the mid-afternoon. Generally speaking, the tornado threat will be highest south and east of the Queen City, but all 22 counties should stay weather-wise.
The start of the workweek looks wonderful. Highs will only reach into the 50s and 60s on Monday, but abundant sunshine will make the day feel much warmer. Temperatures may surge close to 80º by midweek in the Piedmont and Foothills. Another sharp cold front arrives by the end of the week; while rain chances don’t appear especially high at the moment, much colder air will dive into the Carolinas by the end of the week. Lows may dip below freezing for most Friday morning before the mercury recovers into next weekend.
