NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — It has been recently discovered that the top factors that lead to injury in the United States include fluid and electrolyte disorders.
A study, conducted by Jonathan Perkins Injury Lawyers, analyzed data from the Department of Health Care Access and Information to find t
he top factors that have led to emergency room visits.
It was found that the top factors were fluid and electrolyte disorders, which refers to the imbalance of water or important minerals in the body. There were over four million injuries in men and women. It's typically caused by dehydration, diet, kidney disease, and diabetes, as well as burns and trauma.
The second thing on the list was disorders of lipid metabolism. These are conditions that affect how the body processes fats. Common causes include obesity, diabetes, liver disease, diet, genetic disorders, and inflammatory diseases.
Essential hypertension was third on the list. It's also known as high blood pressure. It's typically caused by aging, genetics, having a sedentary lifestyle, sleep apnea, and chronic stress.

The fourth thing was hypertension with complications (secondary hypertension), which refers to high blood pressure caused by a medical condition. It's commonly caused by endocrine disorders, neurological disorders, kidney disease, and adrenal tumors.
Rounding out the top five is type 2 diabetes, caused by physical inactivity, insulin resistance, diet, and a history of gestational diabetes.
Other diagnoses include coronary atherosclerosis/other heart disease, diabetes mellitus with complication, acute and unspecified renal failure, respiratory failure, and heart failure.
"This data highlights the significant impact of chronic health conditions on injury rates in the U.S., and while not all of these factors can be avoided for many people, lifestyle changes can go a long way in preventing injury," said an expert from Jonathan Perkins Injury Lawyers. "These findings serve as a reminder of the link between long-term health conditions and injury risk, highlighting the importance of preventive healthcare measures and early intervention strategies."
