Firefighter rescued after falling through floor while responding to fire in Northeast DC, fire officials say

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Crews rescued a firefighter after he fell through a floor while responding to a townhouse fire in Northeast D.C. early Saturday.
According to the DC Fire and EMS Department (DCFD), just after 2 a.m., crews responded to the 2200 block of 16th St. NE for the report of s
moke coming from a middle-row townhouse.
Upon arrival, they found heavy smoke billowing from the home. Crews discovered a fire in the home's basement and first floor.

While responding to the blaze, fire officials said a firefighter fell through the floor and had to be rescued. A "mayday" call ( a distress signal sent out when a firefighter is in immediate danger) was issued, and crews quickly rescued them from the home.
Officials said the firefighter appeared to be uninjured.

Firefighters continued to attack the fire, which extended to the home's second floor. However, crews had to use "extreme caution" due to the unstable nature of the first floor, according to fire officials. Around 20 units and 100 personnel were at the scene to assist and prevent the fire from spreading further.
Shortly after 4 a.m., firefighters said the blaze was under control. Crews prevented it from spreading to attached houses, and no injuries were reported.
