OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - Reactions are coming out following devastating wildfires and high winds left damage across Oklahoma on Friday.
According to Gov. Kevin Stitt, about 170,000 acres have burned across Oklahoma, and the Oklahoma Forestry Service is currently working to find the exact numbers.
Stitt said he received a report Friday night that about 293 homes and structures were destroyed.
The Director of Oklahoma Emergency Management (OEM), Annie Mack Vest, followed up with the latest reports as of Saturday morning, saying over 200 homes were lost from the fires.
Oklahoma governor declares an emergency declaration after widespread wildfire damage
“The wildfires burning across our state have caused immense destruction, forcing families from their homes and straining our emergency response efforts,” Pro Tem Paxton said. “Governor Stitt’s decisive action on the emergency declaration is a critical step in ensuring our communities receive the necessary resources to combat these fires and begin the recovery process.
“I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the brave first responders, firefighters, law enforcement and emergency personnel who are working tirelessly—often at great personal risk—to protect lives and property. Their dedication and sacrifice in these challenging conditions are truly commendable.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families impacted by these fires, especially those who have suffered losses. We urge all Oklahomans to remain vigilant, follow emergency directives and support those in need during this difficult time. Together, we will recover and rebuild stronger than ever.”
Senate Pro Tempore Lonnie Paxton (R)
“The wildfires that swept across Oklahoma have left devastation in their wake,” Sen. Hall said. “As I toured the devastation this morning with emergency management officials and Governor Kevin Stitt, I saw firsthand the homes, businesses and livelihoods that have been destroyed. We are unfortunately feeling this impact of these fires statewide. Our hearts go out to those who have lost property or been displaced.
“On the state level, we will do whatever we can to help in the immediate aftermath, which is why I appreciate Governor Stitt’s action on issuing an emergency declaration, which will help ensure our local communities receive the state and federal resources they need to battle these fires and begin the recovery process. I also deeply thank him for taking me up on the invitation and coming to tour the damage with me and others this morning.
“I want to thank the first responders, firefighters, law enforcement, emergency personnel and volunteers who are putting themselves in harm’s way to protect lives and property.
“My deepest sympathies are with all those impacted, and I encourage Oklahomans to support their neighbors in need. Our state is strong, and together, we will recover and rebuild.”
