Atlanta’s acclaimed, annual science celebration proves science is for everyone
Atlanta Science Festival (ASF) presented by Delta Air Lines, the city’s ultimate celebration of all things science and one of the largest of its kind in the country, continues proving science is for everyone by spotli
ghting a wide range of scientific voices at more than 100 events through March 22 at venues throughout metro Atlanta.
“We want to make sure all of our many events reflect the fact that science connects each of us, no matter who you are,” says Meisa Salaita, executive co-director of Science ATL–the engineers of the Atlanta Science Festival. “Science truly thrives on diversity. Different backgrounds, nationalities, races, and genders have the ability to deliver unique perspectives, which can light the fuse of innovation and creativity, and help make the world a better place.”
The Atlanta Science Festival emphasizes the importance of the broad representation in science with events such as these:
The Story Collider: Trees
The Story Collider, which produces live science-themed storytelling performances, teams up with Trees Atlanta for an evening of true, personal tales all about trees. Hear stories that might make you laugh, cry, and everything in between. Several different scientists and non-scientists, each with their own individual voice and background, will share their thoughts about trees, the forest, and what it all means to them.
7:30 p.m. March 13. $10-$15. Tickets available at AtlantaScienceFestival.org. Waller’s Coffee Shop, 240 DeKalb Industrial Way, Decatur.
Emilie: La Marquise du Châtelet Defends Her Life Tonight
Learn about 18th century scientific genius Emilie du Châtelet, a French mathematician, physicist, and author during the Age of Enlightenment. This play explores du Châtelet, who ignored the gender norms of the day and made a resounding impact on the scientific world. Although the production runs March 14-23, special Atlanta Science Festival performances occur March 14-16. Additionally, a free, roundtable discussion about du Châtelet featuring women in STEAM takes place 4:30 p.m. March 15 at the theater venue.
8 p.m. March 14-15; 3 p.m. March 16. $17.50-$35. Tickets available at Tix.com. 7 Stages Theatre, 1105 Euclid Ave. NE, Atlanta.
Afro-STEAM
The West Atlanta Watershed Alliance presents Afro-STEAM, a celebration of science through an Afrocentric lens. Much of our modern world, including technology, medicine, art, and even space exploration, has been shaped by Black and African thinkers and cultures. Join this career-day event, recognizing and exploring those contributions with past, present, and future change-makers. Participate in hands-on STEAM activities, interactive presentations, and engaging demonstrations inspired and led by STEAM professionals of Afro-Diaspora descent.
11 a.m.-3 p.m. March 15. Free with online registration at AtlantaScienceFestival.org. Outdoor Activity Center, 1442 Richland Road SW, Atlanta.
Hot Topic: Cool Sciences!
Imagine a vibrant carnival atmosphere filled with the excitement of scientific discovery. Join Georgia Gwinnett College’s diverse group of faculty and students for a family-friendly event designed to ignite a passion for science and technology. Through interactive experiments, STEM challenges, and engaging activities, you’ll explore the wonders of chemistry, physics, and biology.
1-4 p.m. March 15. Free. Georgia Gwinnett College, 1000 University Center Lane, Lawrenceville.
The Exploration Expo
The Exploration Expo, Atlanta’s family-favorite science event, serves as the Festival’s grand finale. Curious kids and adults descend upon Piedmont Park to experience interactive science booths and live science presentations. Atlanta Science Festival’s presenting sponsor, Delta Air Lines, will have a large exhibit at the event featuring inspiring women whose science-related skills and knowledge help make Delta Air Lines what it is today.
