WISHstory | From the Riddick Building to Meridian Street INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — WISH-TV initially started as WISH Radio in 1941, and moved to the Riddick Building at 1440 N. Meridian St. in 1950. By 1964, WISH-TV had outgrown its original location and moved to a new facility just five blocks north. This move was completed without missing a minute of programming, showcasing the station’s commitment to its viewers. “I started work here in the summer of 1956 after coming back from college,” said Jocelyn McCoy, a former secretary at WISH-TV. “It was exciting to watch things grow and change.” Jocelyn McCoy joined WISH-TV just two years after the television station began broadcasting. At that time, the station was housed in the Riddick Building, sharing space with the American Fletcher National Bank and the Riddick Piano Co. The site is now occupied by the American Red Cross Regional Headquarters. McCoy recalled her early days at the station, working as a secretary in the sales department. “Back then they didn’t call us administrative assistants, we were secretaries,” she said. “Everything was much smaller then. We probably had a tenth of the employees that WISH-TV has now.” The new building was dedicated on Aug. 1, 1965, with Mayor John J. Barton participating in the ceremony. Over the decades, the newsroom has shifted locations within the building. McCoy, who had moved on by the time of the new building’s dedication, recently toured the facility, remarking on the many memories it brought back.
