IU basketball players on their tournament hopes
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — IU fell in their first game in the Big Ten Tournament to Oregon on Thursday, 72-59.
Their NCAA Tournament hopes are now out of their hands and they will have to wait for Sunday for their fate, as they sit squarely on the
bubble.
IU has two wins over top 25 teams, on the road against Michigan State and at home against Purdue.
The Hoosiers have four Quad 1 wins, and all of their losses are Quad 1 as well. (Quad 1 games are games against the top 30 teams in the NET at home, top 50 teams in the NET at a neutral site, and top 75 teams in the NET on the road.)
However, the losses have stacked up, with the Hoosiers record sitting at 19-13.
“We’ve just got to trust that we’ve done enough to get in,” IU guard Trey Galloway said. “All we need is a chance, and we’ll prepare for whoever we play and wherever it’s at.”
His teammates were confident that the Hoosiers should be in The Big Dance.
“I think we’re more than deserving,” IU forward Luke Goode said. “We’ve had so many ups and downs this year, and I know the scores and the losses don’t reflect necessarily in the NET or whatever, but those games that we lost, the five in a row, they were one, two possession games. You think Maryland, they hit a game-winning three. You think Purdue, hit a game-winning floater on the road. And then we beat good teams. Michigan State, Purdue at home. We played and beat some really good teams.”
“I think we’re playing well when you’re supposed to play well, coming down the stretch,” IU guard Anthony Leal said. “I think, from top to bottom, we’re one of the more talented teams in the country. So I believe that when we hear our name called on Sunday, we’re going to be in position to make a run. We’ve got the right pieces and things are turning in the right direction for us.”
Here is IU’s resume as of Friday:
NET ranking: 54
Quad 1: 4-13
Quad 2: 4-0
Quad 3: 7-0
Quad 4: 4-0
Strength of Record ranking: 49
Wins Above Bubble ranking: 49
KPI ranking: 35
KenPom ranking: 47
If IU makes the tournament, it will be Mike Woodson’s third NCAA Tournament appearances in his four years as IU’s head coach.
The bracket will be revealed on Sunday at 6 p.m.
