BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Newsweek has released its list of the World’s Best Hospitals for 2025, with two Sanford facilities making the list.
Newsweek conducts the ranking every year based on an extensive evaluation process, which includes an online survey of thousands of medical experts, patien
t experience data, hospital quality metrics, and a PROMs Implementation Survey. Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are questionnaires patients complete to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life.
More than 2,400 hospitals were ranked this year, though according to Newsweek, the number of hospitals in the world is projected to reach almost 216,000 by 2026.
The Sanford Health Bismarck Medical Center made the list for the first time, ranking 410th in the U.S. as the only North Dakota facility on the list. According to the rankings, Sanford performed "above average" for CMS Infection Prevention measures.
“I am incredibly proud of our dedicated team of caregivers for this recognition,” said Todd Schaffer, M.D., president and CEO of Sanford Bismarck, in a press release. “It is a testament of the exceptional care they provide each day. We remain committed to continuously providing innovative care, focused on improving health outcomes for the communities we serve.”

Its counterpart in South Dakota, the Sanford USD Medical Center, landed 54th, also performing above average for CMS Infection Prevention measures.
To compare North Dakota with its surrounding states, three hospitals from South Dakota made the list, as did three from Montana, and 17 from Minnesota. The latter's Mayo Clinic in Rochester claimed the top spot on the list with an overall score of 97.54%.
The Sanford Bismarck region provides health care to central and western North Dakota, along with eastern Montana and northern South Dakota. It includes 26 clinics in Bismarck, Mandan, Minot, Dickinson, Williston, and Watford City, and a Level II trauma center located in Bismarck.
