Pi, pie or pizza? Kern County weighs in on what Pi Day means
Mar 14, 2025
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Pi is the never ending number beginning with 3.14, representing the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter.
The number is celebrated every year on March 14, but Pi Day means something different to everyone.
Bakersfield Christian High School senior and
Pi enthusiast, Madelyn Rudnick, said, "I know Pi Day, like 3.14. It's like for Pi in math."
Since 1988, Pi Day has turned into the day for the best deals on pies and pizza.
BCHS students saw a Blaze Pizza Pi Day promotion online for a buy one pizza, get one for $3.14.

Is pizza a pie?
"Pie is like a circle. So, pizza is a circle like pie," said Rudnick.
"I would say so. You know, it's the same circle, and you cut it in the same shape," said Howard. "So, they've gotta be pretty similar."
"It's got the crust like a pie does too, and it has insides," said Judge. "Some of the pizza has cheese inside the crust. So, I would consider it a pie."
"No," said Angel Salazar, a team member with Blaze Pizza.
Salazar bakes 200 pizzas a day. The customer is always right, but this expert says not when they call pizza a pie.
"When you think of pie you think of sweet. It's not sweet," said Salazar.
Blaze Pizza customer, Jeff Grasbki, is on a Pi Day date with his wife Linda.
He definitely knows what Pi means.
"Yeah, it's round. It's 3.14 in diameter," said Grasbki.
It wouldn't be Pi Day without pie. Unfortunately, Happy Jack's sold out at 10 a.m. on Friday.
Happy Jacks co-owner Frances Rosales said, "I have no more pie."
Rosales has been the owner of Happy Jacks since 1976. Her husband is the pie maker.
"He comes in at three in the morning and makes the pies," said Rosales. "We make our own crust. Everybody's aware of that. We make our own pie filling."
Pi Day has come and gone, but no matter how you spin it, or you slice it, you can still celebrate that Bakersfield is the best place to be on any day.
"People here are very giving," said Rosales. "When there's a crisis, and somebody needs help, we give." ...read more read less
