WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Mariposa, a female bald eagle in the Sedgwick County Zoo, died Friday, the zoo announced.
“After a sudden decline in her health and well-being, we are sad to share that our female Bald Eagle was humanely euthanized today,” the zoo said in a social post. “Some know h
er as Mariposa, but her keepers affectionately refer to her as Honey or Sweet Lady.”

The 35-year-old eagle, born in California in 1989, was part of the US Bald Eagle Recovery Program that helped protect wild chicks from the effects of DDT.
She was unable to return to the wild and was transferred to the San Francisco Zoo, where she lived with her mate for 26 years before moving to the Sedgwick County Zoo in 2016.
“She lived life with a sassy and independent spirit, which is what her keepers will miss the most about her,” the zoo said in the post. “She never shied away from using her voice, greeting her keepers and guests every morning with loud cackles. She was a wonderful ambassador for her species and touched many lives. She will be greatly missed.” ...read more read less
