COVENTRY, R.I. (WPRI) — Although a Coventry family lost all of their belongings in a fire earlier this week, if it weren't for an unlikely hero, they may have lost their lives too.
Brenna Leigh Fournier said her family had moved into their home on Town Farm Road just three weeks ago, ready for
a new beginning.
"It was supposed to be a fresh start," Fournier said. "Now it's a really fresh start, but I'm just glad everyone made it out."

She credits her dog, Peanut, for saving them.
"She just started barking out of nowhere, and this was like a chest bark. And she doesn't do that at all," she explained.
Peanut's barking woke Fournier's mother and brother. When they rushed outside, they saw flames surrounding the house.
"It was right under my mom's room, so she would have, if she wasn't aware, she probably wouldn't have been here with us today," Fournier said.
"She deserves all the treats," Fournier added, describing Peanut's brave actions that morning.

The fire originated in the garage, which housed their grandfather Fred's woodworking shop.
"There was pretty heavy machines in there, there was gas, so that caused the fire to rage even harder and it took apart the whole garage," Fournier said.
The family has been receiving help from the Red Cross, but the emotional toll has been overwhelming.
"My parents lost everything. My grandfather lost everything," Fournier said. "Hopefully there's some pictures that my grandfather can get back, but other than that, the whole house is pretty much gone."
According to a GoFundMe page created for the family, Fred built the home 52 years ago and had recently invited his son Eric and his family to move in with him after losing his wife. With their home now uninhabitable, the fundraiser was set up to help them recover.
The state fire marshal’s office said the cause remains undetermined and will likely stay that way.
